Tom Swopes has been making art for over six decades. He taught others to make and appreciate art from 1981 to 2012. He retired from teaching in 2012 after 25 years of teaching drawing, painting, and sculpture at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Tom is a summa cum laude graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington with a Master of Fine Arts. He has won numerous awards and you will find his work in public and private collections in the United States and abroad.
Much of Tom's artwork can be described as expessionist or surrealist. The typical trait of expressionism is to present the world soley from a subjective perspective, distorting it for emotional effect to evoke mood or insight. Expressionist artists express the meaning of emotional experience rather than physical reality. Surrealist artists allow the unconscious mind to express itself, often resulting in the depiction of illogical or dreamlike scenes and ideas.
